Brandon Barr of Harlingen CISD, Winner of RGV LEAD Scholarship

RGV LEAD is pleased to announce that Brandon Barr of Harlingen High School, Harlingen CISD has been named recipient of a $2,000 SpawGlass Scholarship to Texas State Technical College. Barr received the award as part of the RGV LEAD Scholarship competition in Spring 2015.  Barr was one of over 8,000 Rio Grande Valley high school seniors who graduated as RGV LEAD Scholars in Spring 2015.  Graduation as an RGV LEAD Scholar was a requirement for applying for the SpawGlass Scholarship to TSTC.

Barr plans to pursue a degree in Construction Science at Texas State Technical College. According to Barr, "Upon graduation, I will begin attending TSTC in the Construction Science field. This is the basis for my future...I hope to become a general contractor one day."  Barr stated that his career goals were influenced by the time he spent working for his uncle, who is himself a general contractor.  Barr stated, "My exposure and practice in construction cemented my desire to obtain a degree in this field.”  Barr also enjoyed the opportunity he was given to create pieces of furniture. “I built outdoor furniture and cabinets.  My final project was used in an auction....and I was filled with pride when I found out the piece brought in over $600...That proved that I could use my talent and building skills to earn money and eventually be independent," said Barr.

Barr is the president of Harlingen High School’s Building Trades Club, and he has competed in Skills USA at the state level in framing.  Barr is also an avid runner; he is a member of the RuNsane Running Club and the Harlingen High School Cross Country team. "Even inclement weather would not prevent him from doing his daily multi-mileage runs. This particular trait serves as a testament to his drive and determination," said Gray.

RGV LEAD’s SpawGlass Scholarship to TSTC is funded by SpawGlass, a firm specializing in general contracting and construction management, and TSTC, which offers an associate degree in Building Construction Science.  RGV LEAD is pleased to present this award to this outstanding young man.

RGV LEAD congratulates the thousands of students who graduated as RGV LEAD Scholars in Spring 2015.  Special congratulations to the recipients of the 2015 RGV LEAD Scholarships.
