RGV LEAD and Texas State Technical College will celebrate the Third Annual Generation TX Day on May 3 in partnership with local media KGBT-TV Channel 4. GenTX Day is a statewide initiative that promotes college awareness to students from grades K-12.
The GenTX event at TSTC will be held next Friday from 4-6 p.m at the Service Support Center (SSC). Community leaders and partners are invited along with students and educators to come out and promote a college-going and career-ready culture. Everyone is encouraged to wear college T-shirts in support of GenTx Day.
Local Generation TX coordinator Martha L. Gutierrez said encouraging students to attend college starts at a young age.
Generation Texas is asking students, parents, educators, nonprofits, businesses, and all participating groups to celebrate the day with college enrollment activities that help close educational gaps in communities.
“It’s not just about reaching students at the secondary level,” Gutierrez said. “We need to get students to start thinking about college at an early age. We’ve held several college pep rallies at elementary schools in Harlingen and this is just another way to reach students.”
An outline of the state of Texas will be drawn on the lawn outside the SSC. The outline will be filled in by everyone in attendance and a photograph will be taken to commemorate the event. Channel 4 will also have live shots from the event. The SSC is distinguishable by the wind turbines in the parking lot on the corner of Loop 499 and Rio Hondo Road.
The GenTX movement was created by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board three years ago. This year the Coordinating Board is pushing supporters of GenTX to take at least one of three steps towards college on GenTX Day:
- Fill out a college application
- Take a college tour
- Be a college mentor
Free hot dogs, drinks and plenty of giveaways will be provided. For more information or to set up a booth, contact Martha Gutierrez at 956-364-4548.
