Monica Munoz Applies Mathematics at Tella Tool & Manufacturing Company

Monica Munoz, a Brownsville ISD student, enjoyed using the CMM machine to check dimensions of automotive parts at Tella Tool & Manufacturing in July. Munoz spent part of her summer at Tella Tool in Brownsville through a Brownsville Career Center Project internship managed by RGV LEAD. Tella Tool & Manufacturing (www.tellatool.com) is a Brownsville Contract Manufacturer of Precision Metal Stampings & Assemblies, Fabricating and CNC Machining that does manufacturing work for a variety of industries, such as Automotive, Aerospace, Telecommunications and Computer.

The internship gave Munoz first-hand experience in the ways she can apply her love of mathematics in a manufacturing setting. Munoz enjoyed working with quality technicians/engineers and mechanical engineers on data, precision, dimensions, and measurements of the products being manufactured. She was trained on the basics of GD&T, measurement Instruments and basic stamping manufacturing processes.

She was impressed by the way metals are measured: “I learned to make control plans and be very precise with my measurements.”

Before the internship, Munoz was considering becoming a mathematics professor. The experience at Tella Tool showed her how she could apply mathematics in an engineering and manufacturing atmosphere, and she is now considering the engineering field. “This experience has been great! I now know there are so many things that I can do with my love of math,” said Munoz.

Luis Garcia, Tella Tool’s Plant Manager, said this marked the company’s third year participating in the summer internships coordinated by RGV LEAD. He said, “I went to one of RGV LEAD’s luncheons, and it was there that I realized the importance of the program and that we need to be doing more with our students and community. We need a stronger workforce and this is a great opportunity for students to get exposure. We need to invest in our future workforce.”

Munoz was one of ten students who enjoyed summer internships, which are part of the Brownsville Career Center Project. The project is funded by the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation and managed by RGV LEAD in collaboration with the Brownsville Economic Development Council, Brownsville ISD, and other partners. Luis Garcia, Plant Manager, tells Monica Munoz about the various parts with which Tella Tool works, such as parts for wiper knobs, brackets for radios, anchors for seat belts, airbag and speedometer components, and much more.

Munoz works on quality control plans, entering data and measurements of the manufacturing parts.
